Hit! Or Miss?
I don’t know why everyone looks so worried in this trailer. Yes, buildings topple, ships sink, highways collapse and shiny, spiky, seemingly sentient balls of metallic death pummel the cityscape.
But seriously, do they not know Liam Neeson is on the case?
The arrogance of these unidentified invaders offends him.
He has a very particular set of skills.
He will look for them. He will find them. And he will kill them.
Probably with half a mini-bar worth of smashed glass taped to his knuckles.
Liam Neeson’s irrepressible manliness aside, Battleship looks set to fill the void left by Transformers in this summer’s line-up. Inspired both by Hasbro’s iconic game of maritime tactics and director Peter Berg’s latent love of explosions, this ridiculous venture has a chance to be more than just the sum of its parts.
And though one of said parts is Rihanna in a supporting role, hardly a boon for audience confidence, Battleship’s grandiose visuals, coupled with a refreshingly understated sci-fi design, seem infinitely more appealing than the over-processed, needlessly stylised clutter that was 2009’s infamous Revenge of the Fallen or 2011’s Dark of the Moon.
And if nothing else, the nautical setting could make for a pleasant change of scenery.
