Daniel Craig in 'Bond holding a gun' image shocker!
Check out a large version of the still here.
After a long delay caused by the ongoing financial troubles of parent company MGM, the latest James Bond adventure is finally in production and today we’ve got the first official still of Daniel Craig in (semi) action.
Entitled Skyfall (not Skyrim, stupid brain!), it’s the 23rd Bond film and marks the 50th anniversary of the franchise – that’s five decades since Ursula Andress stepped out of the waves in Dr. No. Craig’s third outing as Bond focuses on his relationship with M (still Dame Judi Dench) as her loyalty is questioned and MI6 comes under siege from a new enemy.
The film also stars Javier Bardem as the principal villain, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Naomie Harris and is directed by Sam Mendes – better known as the helmer of dramas like American Beauty and Revolutionary Road. He previously worked with Craig on 2002s Road to Perdition and there have been murmurs of a more contemplative Bond, even a whisper of the film being held up as an Oscar contender.
While a little more focus on character and story would be welcome in the wake of the vapid Quantum of Solace, it’s important to remember what Bond represents to fans – essentially escapist entertainment regardless of the rather more emotional rigour which has been associated with the Craig movies so far.
Details on the rest of the story remain scarce, and this first still (at least since the one that showed Craig’s arse for some reason) doesn’t reveal a lot more other than we’re set for some moody lighting and that our hero will carry a gun at some point.
Personally, I think Craig has been a great addition to the series, and Casino Royale still holds up well as one of the better action films of the last decade, eon long poker scene notwithstanding – and I’m looking forward to checking out what may be his last chance to own the role.
Skyfall is in Irish and UK cinemas on the 26th of October, two weeks ahead of the US release.
