Javier Bardem drops Despicable Me 2 role

12 Feb 2012
The only way to describe this news is despicable.
Javier Bardem has dropped out of a lead role in Despicable Me 2. The No Country for Old Men star was in line to play the villain of the movie, but negotiations with Universal Studios broke down. Bardem would have taken on the role of El Macho with a son called Machito. The parenting problems of El Macho and Gru, played by Steve Carell, were to pair the evil geniuses but other plot details are unknown.

Otherwise it looks like smooth sailing for the sequel to 2010’s Despicable Me as Steve Carell, Jason Segel and Russell Brand are expected to return to their former roles. Pierre Coffin andChris Renaud are set to take up the director’s helm. Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul return as writers to lend the same charm to the sequel as fans will have come to expect. Despicable Me 2 is scheduled for a release in July 2013.
