Joss Whedon's latest makes a billion. Fans vindicated!
It’s official, The Avengers has taken more than a billion dollars worldwide.
Just 19 days after it hit screens in the UK and Ireland and a mere 10 since its American debut, it has managed to hit the hallowed target that only 11 other films have equalled in the history of cinema.
That 19 day record puts The Avengers in the same field as Avatar and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 – which went on to make $2.8 and $1.3 billion respectively. And while the superhero mashup isn’t likely to match James Cameron’s impressive haul, there’s a good chance it will beat Harry’s final outing with many weeks left on theatrical release.
The billion dollar club currently comprises the following movies – Avatar, Titanic, Harry Potter 7B, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Toy Story 3, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Alice in Wonderland and The Dark Knight. The Avengers $1,002.1 billion dollar haul means it debuts in the club just above The Dark Knight and if ticket sales hold, it should cruise up to fourth place by next weekend, according to stat site Box Office Mojo.
We couldn’t be more delighted to see a truly entertaining film by one of our favourite writer/directors (behold, the Whedon!) getting the attention it deserves worldwide, especially looking at some of the other films which have managed to dominate the box office.
