The Smurfs will get a third film

The Smurfs 2 is still to be released, but Sony is confident.
The Smurfs series has been given the seal of approval by Sony; while production on The Smurfs 2 is ongoing, it has been announced that writers Karey Kirkpatrick and Chris Poche have been given the go-ahead to start working on the third instalment. The Smurfs 2 sees Raja Gosnell return to direct, with Hank Azaria, Neil Patrick HarrisandJayma Mays also set to reprise their roles. The likes of Christina Ricci, Anton Yelchin, Brendan Gleeson, Alan Cummingand John Oliver have also been attached to the project.
Despite the backing of the series, there will be plenty of pressure to live up to after 2011’s The Smurfs grossed over $550 million. The Smurfs 2 will be released in North America on July 31st with a European release date set for August 2nd.
