Rihanna will lend voice to Happy Smekday!

21 Jun 2012
When aliens celebrate Christmas.
DreamWorks is lining up a 2014 release for Happy Smekday! which will star Jim Parsons and pop-star turned actor Rihanna. The animated movie will be an adaptation of Adam Rex’s children book The True Meaning of Smekday. After some aliens get evicted from their own planet by a villainous race called the Gorg, they take over earth and rename the Christmas holiday Smekday.
The story will be scripted for the big screen by Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember (Get Smart). Antz co-director Tim Johnson will take the director’s chair for this project. DreamWorks has a fairly packed schedule for the next few years with the likes of Rise of the Guardians, Turbo, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, and How to Train Your Dragon 2 lined up. Happy Smekday! could be an interesting project in this slate, but unfortunately we will be waiting until 2014.Synopsis of The True Meaning of Smekday on Amazon:
It all starts with a school essay.
When twelve-year-old Gratuity (“Tip”) Tucci is assigned to write five pages on “The True Meaning of Smekday” for the National Time Capsule contest, she’s not sure where to begin. When her mom started telling everyone about the messages aliens were sending through a mole on the back of her neck? Maybe on Christmas Eve, when huge, bizarre spaceships descended on the Earth and the aliens – called Boov – abducted her mother? Or when the Boov declared Earth a colony, renamed it “Smekland” (in honor of glorious Captain Smek), and forced all Americans to relocate to Florida via rocketpod?
In any case, Gratuity’s story is much, much bigger than the assignment. It involves her unlikely friendship with a renegade Boov mechanic named J.Lo.; a futile journey south to find Gratuity’s mother at the Happy Mouse Kingdom; a cross-country road trip in a hovercar called Slushious; and an outrageous plan to save the Earth from yet another alien invasion.
