Zero Dark Thirty gets a trailer
07 Aug 2012
The Hurt Locker directors latest thriller on its wayKathryn Bigelow’s latest, Zero Dark Thirty, has just released its first teaser trailer.
After some success in the 80s and 90s with cult flicks like Near Dark and machismo number Point Break, Kathryn (former Mrs James Cameron) Bigelow fairly dropped off the map – spurred by high concept failures like 1995s Strange Days and the dull K-19 The Widowmaker.
But her comeback is the stuff of Hollywood legend, crafting a critically acclaimed thriller in 2008s The Hurt Locker that not only went on to win six Oscars but also nabbed Best Film and Best Director from Cameron and his Avatar behemoth.Bigelow has seemingly been in no hurry to produce a follow up – developing cross border thriller Triple Frontier with The Hurt Locker scribe Mark Boal and also putting together what began as an examination of a failed attempt by the US government to locate Osama bin Laden. After he was found and killed by US Special Forces in May 2011, the script was rewritten and pre-production began in earnest.
Check out the first teaser for Zero Dark Thirty – which is a military term for an unspecified time during the hours of darkness, fact fans!
There’s not a lot of actual footage here but the redacted line on satellite imagery is a nice touch and there are some glimpses of the rather marvellous Jennifer Ehle in action. As an aside, what sort of super agent did she acquire recently? After appearing in TV’s Pride and Prejudice in the 90s, her career seemed to have stalled – but she’s had strong turns in TheKing’sSpeech, The Adjustment Bureau, The Ides of March and Contagion in the last two years.
The rest of the cast includes Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton, Mark Strong, Kyle Chandler and Frank Grillo. Zero Dark Thirty shot in India for Pakinstan in summer 2012 and is once again written by Mark Boal.Zero Dark Thirty is set for a US release on the 19th of December, with European dates to follow in 2013.
