Long, slow-paced and deliberate, A Prophet will reward those who put in the effort. And judging by all the negative reviews it is sad to think so many people out there just cannot abide subtitles...doesn't say much for the intellect of many folks. Cant they see the language listed in the Description is 'French'?! Anyway, for those willing to take it on it is very good. I'll say not fantastic due to the pacing and a thin plot but the lead acts it well.

I really enjoyed this film. It maintains your attention throughout, with its look in to France's underbelly of crime, prison and race relations.
You go from sympathy with the main character at first to marvelling at his survival skills, mixed with sadness at his descent in to serious crime. It is fairly graphic at times in depicting violence and is quite long, but yet it doesn't feel that long. I'd recommend it.

A Prophtet tells the story of a somewhat naive but intelligent young inmate from Arabic origins who rises through the criminal ranks to become a big boss. Serve with an outstanding cast and an almost exclusively males and non-professional actors, the film of Jacque Audiard manages to prove that you don't need a so called bankable actor/actress in order to make a masterpiece.

My better half is not a great fan of the foreign movie but she loved this and so did I, it is a real warts and all portrayal of what life is like inside the prison system in France grim and hard hitting with a good plot to support the overall movie highly recommend one of the best movies I have seen this year.

Really enjoyed this, but its not for the faint hearted. the main character is intriguing, watching how he evolves, seeing how he moves from slave to master. I found it dragged a little here and there though. Still recommended, if you can stomach the violence which in parts is pretty graphic.
