SIMPLE STORY BUT STILL VERY WATCHABLE MIKE LEIGH
EOIN from Dublin, 03 Apr 2009
I'm with Tim from Cork on this. If you are not a Mike Leigh fan or think that all films should be feelgood with a happy ending, you will be disappointed with this.
While the storyline isn't as interesting as in some of his others e.g. Secrets and Lies,Vera Drake,Career Girls-it still delivers in terms of down-to-earth realism which I find much more appealing than the predictable stylised fare which is 90% of current cinema output.

All or Nothing

First off, all the other reviews below obviously didn't know what to expect so don't get this if you're not familiar with the work of Mike Leigh. Now, I was under the impression that this was his most highly acclaimed films but, being a big fan of Vera Drake I would say there's no comparison. It's definately more representative of his style but while that can bring admiration uniqueness it doesn't mean it's a great film.

Like an omnibus edition of Eastenders

A most depressing film, where everyone is unhappy and no one's life holds any hope. Most of the characters are portrayed as being unable to have successful relationships and intelligent conversations. This is turned around for one family by a significant event. But the hopeful future offered for them seems unlikely in view of the previous events and relationships. Like an omnibus edition of Eastenders!
A bit on the depressing side...

I see where that Eastenders reference came from! Watchable drama but pretty slow and without the usual Mike Leigh warmth. Simple tale of the residents of a housing complex whose characters are struggling with poverty, disappointment and desperation of the daily grind. Wouldn't rush to rent this one.
Depressing, distant, detached, delightful

I must say I enjoy Mike Leigh's characters and their stories rather than the plot of any movies which tend to be weak. Timothy Spall always good. Enjoyed the show. I would cavaet this by saying I am a big fan of Senor Leigh.
