Oh, kind of funny looking...

Kidnapping scam that goes horribly wrong leaves pregnant cop Marge Gundersson (McDormand) to pick up the pieces. Jerry Lundergaard (William H. Macey) is desparation personified as the pathetic plotter. Oscar-worthy performance here, folks.
Surreal Minnesota winterscape adds to the other-worldly quality, but key in this respect are the accents, cadence and mannerisms of the area, masterfully exploited by the cast.
Best bit? Old giffer sweeping his drive talks to the trooper.

Beautifully shot, atmospheric masterpiece

I saw this on a plane a while ago and was seriously impressed by the acting and the sense of place achieved by the cinematography. At that time I missed some of it because I fell asleep (not because of the film). On watching it again, this time with the benefit of a Sony "home theatre" system, T was completely blown away, again by the wonderful cinematography and the great acting, particularly Frances McDormand. The Coens do it again! Don't miss it.
Coen Bros gem

This is one of my favourite movies of all time. Atmospheric, humorous, chilling. It hits all the right notes and the acting performances are unforgettable. Get it now if you haven't seen it and if you have, get it to remind yourself what great cinema is all about.

It's a miracle: A tough, honest, bloody film set so far from the bright lights it feels as if it's on a different planet, yet knowable and absolutely compelling from start to finish. A crime gem that is darkly funny even when it's chilling -- a classic.
Top class!

I havent rented it here because I own a copy. But reading the reviews here I thought I would pen my own.
An absolute gem of a movie, the acting is superb from all, the script and storyline is wholly engaging and the characters are intriguing
