4.5 out of 10 Masterly film-making, a cut above other horrors
Emma from Dublin, 03 Mar 2013
I don't normally bother with horror films as I find them all a bit silly. However this film has an emotional core, carried perfectly by the two central performances, making it a cut above the rest. Beautifully atmospheric, it pulls you into the strange, wintery world of an isolated community, and the equally isolated main character, Oskar. It doesn't get a top score from me as a couple of the scenes were dud and added nothing to the experience (I'll just say "cats" & leave it at that...) but largely the creators step back from the more shocking moments and leave the right amount to the viewers' imagination. Indeed the penultimate scene is a masterly piece of film-making, when the story's climactic moment is portrayed through a perfect combination of a long static shot and chilling sounds. Wonderful, stuff, recommend it highly.

4.5 out of 10 A must-see film
Melinda from Cavan, 02 Sep 2009
Wasn't sure what to expect with this film - anything that even vaguely approaches the horror genre isn't usually my cup of tea - but this is in a league of its own. The two lead actors are both brilliant (the same was also true of Somerstown which I had watched a few days before - another film I can highly recommend) and the story is totally compelling. I particularly liked the way the film included a number of 'facts' about vampires - or rather things that you would know from other films such a

4.5 out of 10 Glad we let this one in!
Darren from Dublin, 01 Dec 2010
We heard good things about this film when it was first released(my initial doubts surrounding vampire movies proved way off the mark). Great performances from the two leading characters, especially being kids with a compelling and absorbing storyline supported by some glorious shots. Well worthy of the plaudits it has received to date. One minor "complaint" we have is that the version we got was that the subtitles were for hard of hearing(eg dog barking, car screeching etc) only as oppo

1.5 out of 10 Not won over!
emmet from Dublin, 09 Apr 2010
Having read the reviews both here and in rotton tomatoes I was looking forward to watching this film. However the only thing I was left with at the end was a feeling of gratitude that I wasnt born anywhere in the bleakness and sterility of scandanavia. The photography portrays well the travails and mind numbing boredom of downtown sweden. However I felt the film itself left an awful lot to be desired. Both of us watching it waited for something to happen ,and perhaps some deeper explanation

4.5 out of 10 A little chilly...
Philip from Dublin, 06 Aug 2009
This might well be a modern classic. A lonely, bullied boy with disturbingly violent fantasies meets a lonely little girl who has moved in next door to him. She is 12 - but, as she dryly notes, has been 12 for a very long time. She is in fact a vampire. And they become friends. And very bloody things ensue. The film is sometimes astonishingly beautiful, chilly, violent and very moving. The two child actors are incredibly good, especially the girl. Unmissable.
