Quite possibly one of the best films ever made. A seering critique of the madness and butchery of war and an insight into our common humanity and how it can shine through at the end of it all. A stellar performance as well by Kirk Douglas and the entire ensemble. Some of the cinematography is just breathtaking and almost makes a case for making films in black and white again just for the starkness that it provides. And all in under an hour and a half. If you love cinema, see this film!

The story takes place in 1916 France, as the French command orders an exhausted unit to wrest control of an anthill from the Germans--expecting a casualty rate of 60 percent.
