Heartbreaking biography
Lynne from Dublin, 30 Jul 2010
So sad to see society treat a disabled but otherwise brilliant man so abominably. David Lynch handles the story of Joseph Merrick beautifully but somewhat inaccurately, I suppose for cinematic purposes. The setting of gritty 19th century London further highlights just how much this man had to suffer. A must-see if you're interested in discovering society's downfall but one man's everlasting optimism.

The intelligent monster

I actually didn't realize this was an old black and white film and was nearly going to turn it off after the first few minutes. I'm happy I didn't though as the story has a big heart. The elephant man is a very tragic tale of an intelligent and gentle man living inside a body straight from a freak show. If you're not bothered with the black and whiteness and old fashioned style it's worth watching.
Elephant man

I liked this film a lot, heard it was very good and wasn't sure what to expect. Hopkins is class and this is film is based on a true story which makes it even more interesting. This film shows the best and the worst side of people.
