An intriguing follow up to the excellent original. Popeye Doyle is the classic "fish out of water" as his obsessive hunt for Charnier takes him to the seedy streets of Marseilles. A slower and more ponderous movie than the first, which in some ways is a good thing. The movie really gives a dark insight into the horrors of drug addiction.
Hackman again gives a brilliant performance as Doyle.

The action from the streets of Harlem is transferred to Marseilles and the gateway to the drug trade. Popeye is a fish out of water, getting no help from local french authorities as he goes in search of the drug baron he trailed in the first movie. Even grittier than the previous film, particularly with the emphasis on the effects of drug abuse. Very abrupt ending too...
