4.5 out of 10 Haunting and expressive movie
David from Dublin, 11 May 2010
This isn't a happy fun time movie, in fact, it's view of the whole of humanity is rather pessimistic given how it deals with the reaction of a group of people in a desolate location after finding they are all under threat by something they don't understand. Still, it goes balls to the walls by the end, and some grotesque special effect that still are strong today.

4.5 out of 10 You know you want to.
Sophie from Dublin, 13 Jun 2013
Give yourself a treat and rent this film. From the moment John Carpenter's eery music begins you know you're on to a winner. A Sci-Fi horror that is elevated by a great story, great acting and, despite it's vintage, great special effects. Hide behind the sofa and enjoy.

4 out of 10 In the arctic no-one can hear you scream...
Darren from Cork, 14 Jul 2011
Bearing more than a few similarities to Alien, which was released three years before it, The Thing nonetheless holds its own with some spectacular effects (for its time), genuine tension and paranoia and an uneasy ending. Recommended.

4 out of 10 A Good Thing
Barry from Dublin, 25 Jul 2007
Ah yeah, you know what you're getting from the cover. Aliens, Kurt Russell and snow. And lot's of them. It hasn't really dated any. Ripley wouldn't have done any better.

What's it about....
Based on both the short story by John W. Campbell, Jr. and the 1951 film produced by Howard Hawks, THE THING is John Carpenter's stunning masterpiece of horror. A group of weary scientists enduring the winter in an isolated camp deep in Antarctica chance upon an alien spacecraft buried in the ice. Near the strange craft is the body of an alien being, frozen solid. Thinking they have made the find of a lifetime, the scientists bring the alien body back to camp and thaw it...
