Directed by Anne Fontaine, this is a beautiful film and perfectly cast to portray the least told, true rags to riches story of the last century. The film depicts Coco Chanels early life up to the start of her career. It does show the humble beginnings and Audrey Tautou is a real star in the role. However, although the title is in English, the movie is French with subtitles.
Overall the story does seem a bit disjointed. There is no real explanation why she had the success she did, apart from a need to be different.

Firstly let me just get it off my chest that I absolutely hate and abhor the fashion industry. All it promotes is anorexia and how to be a diva/bitch. Anyway thats a rant for another time and place. So it was pleasant to watch a movie with a more interesting slant on such a topic. It is an elegant and stylish effort with Audrey Tautou as ever shining in the lead role.

This was a really interesting and captivating film. My one quibble would be the very abrupt ending which just felt like a total afterthought rather than a natural progresson. This put Coco's independence and genius into perspective. Well worth a watch.
Great acting and story !

Audrey Tautou shines in this tale of the life of Coco Chanel. You forget the subtitles and just enjoy learning about her life. This movie gives you a real insight into the woman behind the brand. Very enjoyable and well worth a watch.
